The Department of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), has recalled the existence of a specific healthcare protocol for Sahrawi children participating in the ‘Vacaciones en Paz’ program during their summer stay in the archipelago.

The main objective of this protocol is to promote the social integration of these minors during their summer stay in the Canary Islands and ensure their well-being and health. Specific goals include reviewing the health status of children from refugee camps.
Preventive and health promotion activities will be carried out, addressing acquired illnesses, accidents, socio-family difficulties, and psychological disorders. Furthermore, the adequate immunization status of all hosted minors will be confirmed, following the standards recommended by the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD) and adapted to the epidemiological needs of their place of origin and living conditions.
The protocol places special emphasis on accident prevention, informing host families about risks of poisoning, drowning, falls, or traffic accidents. It also addresses the prevention of emotional disorders, promoting a calm and balanced family and social environment, and facilitating communication between the minors and their families in the camps.
Regarding lifestyle, a varied and Mediterranean diet, respectful of their culture and religious beliefs, will be advised, avoiding ultra-processed foods and refined sugars. The importance of establishing vacation routines with outdoor games and activities, as well as social relationships, is highlighted.
The ‘Vacaciones en Paz’ protocol also details the healthcare actions. The first visit to the SCS will include anamnesis, a complete physical examination, and screening tests. Treatment for diagnosed illnesses will be provided, with referrals to dental health and, if necessary, hospital care. Vaccination status will be reviewed to coordinate actions with responsible associations according to the authorized calendar in the region of origin.
