The local council is considering the accumulated weight from water absorption after rainy periods and poor root systems as the main hypotheses. According to statements from the Councilor for Municipal Services, Fran Hernández, this type of dragon tree can absorb up to 70% of its water capacity, significantly increasing its weight.
Hernández, speaking to Televisión Canaria, acknowledged that the fall of the tree, located in the Plaza de Los Remedios next to the Cathedral of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, was a surprise, as the Parks and Gardens department had not detected any prior signs of collapse.
Parks and Gardens technicians will assess the dragon tree's condition after its removal to determine the exact circumstances of the incident. The complete fall of the nearly 15-meter specimen occurred during Saturday night, preventing personal injuries despite it being a busy area.
Following the incident, the La Laguna Local Police and municipal services cordoned off the area. Overnight, workers labored to remove the tree and tidy the surroundings, and by Sunday morning, the cleaning service had completed the work to restore normalcy to the square.
