The healthcare team of one of the SUC's medicalized helicopters, based in Gran Canaria, has explained the steps to follow while waiting for medical assistance after rescuing a person from an aquatic environment. This initiative is part of the SUC's summer campaign and coincides with World Drowning Prevention Day.
The first step is to check the rescued person's level of consciousness. If they are conscious and breathing, they should be placed in the recovery position until emergency services arrive.
If, however, the person is unconscious, not breathing, or shows no signs of life, they should be placed on their back, paying special attention to the neck to avoid cervical movement, as a potential spinal cord injury should always be suspected.
Next, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers should begin, prioritizing chest compressions. The SUC reminds the public that a healthcare coordinator will provide instructions over the phone on how to perform resuscitation maneuvers until emergency services arrive.
