The Canary Islands Health Department has requested the Antigua Town Council to transfer an adjacent plot of land to the current health center to establish a 24-hour emergency service and a Conventional Radiology area, responding to a public demand.

The General Directorate of Economic Resources of the Canary Islands Health Department has formally requested this week from the Antigua Town Council to acquire a plot of land adjacent to the municipal health center. The objective is to facilitate the implementation of a Continuous Care Point (PAC), which will include a 24-hour emergency service, and a new Conventional Radiology area.
This initiative arises in response to a repeated demand from residents of Antigua, in Fuerteventura, who have persistently requested an uninterrupted emergency service and a medicalized ambulance. The need for these services has been highlighted by tragic incidents where individuals passed away while awaiting specialized care. In January 2026, 5,098 signatures were registered at the Antigua Town Council, driven by a resident, to request both services, with the aim of forwarding them to the general secretariat of the Canary Islands Health Service and the General Directorate of Public Health of the Government of the Canary Islands.
The proposed expansion aligns with the Health Department's commitment to improving healthcare in the municipality. Furthermore, it is supported by a specific allocation of 100,000 euros in the General Budgets of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands for 2026, earmarked for the establishment of this Continuous Care Point.
Currently, the health center has an emergency area with five differentiated spaces, covering 76.31 square meters, where emergencies are attended from Monday to Friday, from 8:00 to 20:00 hours. However, a report from the General Directorate of Assistance Programs, issued on December 9, 2025, established that the future PAC will require a total built area of 376.60 square meters to adequately house the new services.
Technical reports from the General Directorate of Economic Resources have determined that the current building does not have sufficient physical capacity to integrate these new spaces. An upward expansion would imply a significant structural intervention on the entire property, which would force the temporary closure of the center and the relocation of healthcare activities. Therefore, the transfer of the adjacent plot is presented as the most viable alternative to carry out the expansion and definitively establish the PAC.
While administrative and technical procedures are underway, the Health Area continues to strengthen healthcare in Antigua. This includes an increase in medical staff, an intensification of healthcare activity, and the expansion of services such as Teledermatology and Retinography.
