The Government of the Canary Islands, through its Ministry of Territorial Policy and Water, has allocated five million euros for the acquisition of essential materials to modernize desalination plants and pumping systems in Fuerteventura, thereby securing the island's water supply.

This investment will enable the upgrade of various key water supply infrastructures in Fuerteventura, ranging from seawater intake wells to pumping stations responsible for transporting desalinated water. The subsidy was granted at the end of 2024, and the Cabildo tendered for the supply of materials during 2025, which are now available to the Island Water Council.
The availability of these materials on the island is crucial for maintaining operational and updated facilities, allowing for immediate replacement of parts in case of breakdown. The new components will be progressively incorporated into the three desalinated water production centers located in Puerto del Rosario, Gran Tarajal, and Corralejo, as well as into the pumping stations of the potable water distribution network.
Furthermore, the existing reverse osmosis membranes will be gradually replaced, which will not only improve the quality of desalinated drinking water but also increase current production capacity. The project also includes electrical panels and special parts for replacement in pumping stations and desalination plants.

"We cannot stop implementing measures to guarantee supply for the coming decades on the island."

Although the water emergency phase in Fuerteventura has been overcome, authorities emphasize the need to continue implementing measures to ensure long-term supply. In this context, the project for a future desalination plant in southern Fuerteventura, specifically in Matas Blancas, within the municipality of Pájara, was mentioned. This project, on which work is already underway with the Cabildo, aims to decentralize production, improve supply across the island, and reduce reliance on Puerto del Rosario.
