Club Baloncesto Gran Canaria officially confirmed on Thursday the departure of Willy Villar as sporting director, despite having a contract valid until 2027. The decision follows the team's relegation to the Primera FEB league.

The dismissal of the professional, who had led the sports department since the summer of 2020, occurred on Wednesday afternoon. This move comes after the resignation of former president Sitapha Savané, announced last Monday, and concludes the club's 31 consecutive seasons in the Liga Endesa.
Villar, whose contract was extended until 2027 last summer along with Savané and coach Jaka Lakovic, has faced criticism for decisions made during the recent season. During his tenure, the club won the BKT EuroCup in the 2022-2023 season and was a finalist in the same continental competition last year. Additionally, the team qualified multiple times for the Copa del Rey, reaching the semifinals in the 2025 edition, and for the national league playoffs.

"The club wishes to thank him for his services and wishes him the best of luck in his personal and professional future."

Villar's departure is part of the club's restructuring following the sporting relegation, an event that marks the end of the team's long-standing presence in the top tier of Spanish basketball.
