Education allocates 1.37 million to remove asbestos in five high schools in Gran Canaria

The works, to be carried out in centers in the capital, Agüimes, and San Mateo, will also include improvements in lighting, insulation, and flooring.

The Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands has awarded a 1.37 million euro project for the removal of asbestos and renovation of roofs in five high schools in Gran Canaria.

The action will take place in the high schools Primero de Mayo, Pérez Galdós, and Feria del Atlántico, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, as well as at the IES Joaquín Artiles in Agüimes and IES Vega de San Mateo.
The project, divided into five lots with individual budgets ranging from 242,000 to 308,000 euros, not only ensures the safe removal of asbestos cement and waste management but also includes the installation of new roofs with thermal insulation, replacement of gutters and downspouts, and improved lighting with LED technology.
Complementary works include the renovation of false ceilings and flooring in various areas of the centers. At IES Primero de Mayo, workshops and an adjacent shed will be addressed. IES Pérez Galdós will have its gymnasium roof renovated, while at IES Feria del Atlántico, workshops and the classroom block will be worked on.
Furthermore, the IES Joaquín Artiles will receive a new roof for its gymnasium and energy efficiency improvements to its carpentry. Finally, at IES Vega de San Mateo, roofs, storage annexes, and existing insulation will be removed, along with the renovation of false ceilings and the installation of new lighting.
