The activity, coordinated by the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) and part of a project by the La Caja de Canarias Foundation, was held in collaboration with the Vecindario Gran Canaria Chess Club at the headquarters of the Ansite Neighborhood Association. This year, twenty-two users from the network of Psychosocial Rehabilitation Day Centers in Gran Canaria participated, with support from the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the Santa Lucia City Council.
In the competition, a user from the CDRS of Telde was crowned the winner, followed by a user from the CDRPS of Casa del Mar as runner-up, and a user from CDPRS of Vecindario in third place.
This tournament, which began in 2014, underscores the importance of community-based activities in strengthening the social integration of participants. The CDRS emphasize the numerous cognitive, emotional, and social benefits associated with playing chess.
The Psychosocial Rehabilitation Day Centers (CDRPS) of Gran Canaria are socio-sanitary facilities of the Social Care Institute of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the Mental Health Network of the SCS. They serve users with severe psychiatric disorders, focusing on their recovery, improved quality of life, and social participation. Their work has expanded to involve other groups, including children, young people, and the elderly, with a transversal and inclusive approach.
