Gran Canaria raises heat alert to orange with temperatures reaching 37 degrees

The archipelago activates a pre-alert for high temperatures and forest fire risk throughout the weekend.

The State Meteorological Agency has intensified heat warnings in the Canary Islands for the coming days, raising the alert level to orange in Gran Canaria as temperatures are set to hit 37 degrees.

The Government of the Canary Islands has declared a pre-alert status for maximum temperatures across the entire archipelago starting at 08:00 this Sunday. Simultaneously, a forest fire risk alert has been issued for Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
In Gran Canaria, a yellow warning will be in effect on Sunday between 11:00 and 20:00, with temperatures potentially reaching 35 degrees in the mid-altitudes of the south, east, and west, as well as the Tejeda basin. On Monday, the alert will be upgraded to orange in the same areas, with highs of 37 degrees and tropical nights where temperatures will not drop below 26 or 27 degrees.
Other islands will also be affected by the heatwave. Fuerteventura will remain under a yellow warning throughout Sunday and Monday, with highs of 34 degrees in inland areas. Meanwhile, Lanzarote, Tenerife, and La Gomera will see yellow warnings on Monday, with temperatures reaching 34 degrees in the areas specified by Aemet.
