A patient who spent six years admitted to the Hospital Insular in Gran Canaria has finally returned home after overcoming the architectural barriers that prevented his discharge.

The prolonged hospital stay, which has become one of the longest recorded in the Canary Islands, came to an end thanks to the individual's personal determination and the support of various solidarity initiatives. The patient noted that the lack of housing adapted to his physical needs was the main obstacle to leaving the medical center during this long period.
During the years of admission, the protagonist highlighted the difficulty of living with the constant uncertainty of not having an adequate housing solution. Finally, a social project linked to IKEA Islas allowed for the adaptation of his new home, thus facilitating his return to daily life with his family.

"In the end, I decided it, I said I was going to achieve it, and here we are at home, finally."

Despite the joy of reuniting with his environment, the individual acknowledges having forged close bonds with the medical staff and other patients during his time at the Hospital Insular. Now, he faces an adaptation process with multiple personal projects, including painting classes, theater, and adaptive sports.

"There are many people who do not have that social resource to be able to have a dignified life or a better life."

Looking ahead, his goal is to channel his personal experience to advocate for the rights of people with severe physical disabilities and those with high dependency needs, calling for greater social justice and resources for those in similar vulnerable situations.
