Dr. Natalia Díaz Ortega, a specialist in Family and Community Medicine, presented the findings of this initiative at the National Semergen Congress held in Santiago de Compostela. The program, based on the Vivifrail project, was a collaboration between the Las Breñas Health Center and the local town council.
The activity included supervised multicomponent physical exercise, physiotherapy, and nutritional education. The 34 participants, 19 women and 15 men with an average age of 78.5 years, engaged in three hours of weekly exercise adapted to their functional progress.
Following the intervention, a global improvement was observed in functional capacity and in anxiety and depression scales, along with high satisfaction with the physical activity. All re-evaluated participants showed improvement in at least one dimension of their physical performance, except for one with low adherence.
The results highlight the effectiveness of such community programs from Primary Care in promoting healthy aging, preventing frailty, and fostering personal autonomy.
The National SEMERGEN Congress, held from October 7 to 10, 2026, brought together over 4,700 doctors and 1,700 residents in Family Medicine, discussing challenges such as teaching innovation and artificial intelligence in healthcare.
