The Canary Islands World Biosphere Reserve Foundation La Palma (FCRMBLP) and the Consortium for the Design, Construction, Equipment, and Operation of the Canary Islands Oceanic Platform (PLOCAN) have signed a General Protocol of Action to enhance their cooperation in the marine and coastal environment of La Palma.
This agreement, formalized in Tazacorte on September 18, 2026, aims to promote joint projects in research, environmental monitoring, training, outreach, and citizen science. It will also facilitate the coordinated use of key scientific and technical infrastructures, such as the BECOMAR Rogelio Herrera laboratory and its associated vessel.
The protocol establishes a framework for developing actions of common interest, aligning with the Biosphere Reserve's role in generating knowledge and promoting territorial conservation. The marine and coastal environment of La Palma holds particular significance within this framework.
The collaboration pools the complementary capabilities of both entities: PLOCAN's scientific and technological knowledge, infrastructure, and marine research experience, alongside the Biosphere Reserve's territorial knowledge, environmental management expertise, and connections with local stakeholders.
The ultimate goal is to translate this knowledge to the territory and society, providing tools for a better understanding of the marine environment, supporting decision-making, and fostering a more informed citizenry committed to conserving their surroundings.
