The Cabildo de Gran Canaria has finished the repair work on the retaining wall on the GC-550, one of the 22 roads in the Insular Road Network affected by the storm. The investment for this project was close to one million euros.
The insular counselor of Public Works and Infrastructures, Augusto Hidalgo, along with the mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, the councilor for Public Works of Agüimes, Rubén Romero, and the first deputy mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Julio Ojeda, visited the site. The road suffered a major collapse and had been closed for five months.
Augusto Hidalgo explained that the road will be operational from early Thursday, allowing the connection between Agüimes and Santa Lucía once again. He thanked the efforts made to complete the work, which is vital for the municipality due to its high traffic volume.
The mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, thanked the Cabildo for the planning and commitment to execute the project, highlighting the road's importance for residents and visitors.
For his part, Julio Ojeda, first deputy mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, celebrated the restoration of connectivity and described the work as highly complex, returning normality to this crucial road.
The reconstruction of the largest wall, measuring 90 meters long and approximately eight meters high, involved significant excavation to reach firm ground, ensuring adequate foundations. A new concrete masonry retaining wall was built on this base.
Drainage systems were incorporated to eliminate pressure and prevent future collapses. After the wall was built, the backfill was completed and compacted, restoring the road's stability. Vehicle containment systems, signage, and marking were also replaced, ensuring road safety conditions.
Further work will continue on the GC-550 at kilometer 3.9, closer to Santa Lucía, expected to finish by mid-October. In this section, the road will remain open with traffic light control and limited to one lane for three to four more weeks.
