The Civil Guard has arrested a woman with a criminal record in southern Gran Canaria for a sophisticated jewelry theft in a hotel, uncovering a digital theft tactic.

A police operation in the south of Gran Canaria has highlighted the increasing sophistication of thefts in tourist accommodations. The resolution of a significant robbery, carried out without signs of violence, has revealed a digital theft tactic that evaded routine inspections in hotel complexes. The investigation, conducted by the Civil Guard of the Las Palmas Command, concluded with the arrest of a woman with an extensive criminal record.
The case began following a report by a tourist in the municipality of Mogán, who reported the disappearance of a lot of high-end gold jewelry valued at approximately 15,000 euros. Alarm bells rang upon discovering that neither the room door nor the safe showed any physical damage or signs of tampering, prompting officers to shift the investigation towards the establishment's technology.
Investigators requested internal logs from the complex's magnetic locks. The technical analysis detected the use of a 'ghost card,' linked to a former employee who had been dismissed and whose card was reported lost. Cross-referencing data with the active staff shifts revealed that the lost card opened the victim's door minutes before the suspect accessed an adjacent room using her valid work credentials.
With the technical evidence, the Civil Guard located the employee in a common area of the establishment. After displaying extreme nervousness and attempting to conceal her personal wallet, officers found the missing electronic key. Subsequent investigations have linked the detainee to three other similar incidents that occurred recently within the same complex.
The swift intervention prevented the destruction of key evidence. The arrested individual, who has numerous prior records for property crimes, has been handed over to the judicial authorities in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
