The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands has announced a significant increase in specialized health training (FSE) positions for the upcoming call, with the objective of strengthening Primary Care. Out of a total of 492 positions offered for 2027, 27 more than the previous year, 10 positions will be specifically allocated to training family doctors and nurses, representing 37% of the new positions.
This decision aligns with the +Primary Care Strategy promoted by the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) and the recommendations of the Ministry of Health, which identify Family and Community Medicine as one of the specialties with the greatest need for professionals in the coming decade. Specifically, the offer for resident internal physicians (MIR) in this specialty in the Canary Islands increases from 92 to 98 positions (a 6.5% rise), and nursing positions (EIR) grow by 4, reaching 34 (a 13% increase).
Nationally, the FSE positions offer for 2027 reaches a record of 12,850 positions, a 3.9% increase from the previous call. Since 2018, the National Health System has expanded its training capacity by 4,448 positions, an accumulated growth of 53%. The Canary Islands also marks a new record, with a 51% growth since the pandemic, surpassing the national average.
The distribution of positions by degree nationally includes 9,676 for Medicine, 2,341 for Nursing, and the rest for Pharmacy, Clinical Psychology, Biology, Hospital Radiophysics, and Chemistry. In the Canary Islands, MIR accounts for 360 positions, followed by EIR with 102, and completed with positions for Pharmacy (FIR), Psychology (PIR), Hospital Radiophysics, and Biology (BIR).
The call also strengthens the teaching capacity of Lanzarote, which will offer 23 FSE positions, including eight for MIR and four for nursing residents in Family and Community Care, as part of a decentralization strategy.
The selection tests will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2027, in 26 Spanish locations. The exam will consist of 200 questions plus 10 reserve questions, lasting four and a half hours. The final score will be composed of 90% from the exam and 10% from academic merits. This year, measures will be implemented to detect the use of prohibited electronic devices during the test.
