The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council has been honored with the Platinum Broom at the 20th edition of the ATEGRUS association awards, in recognition of its urban hygiene management.

This prestigious national award highlights the council's commitment to improving health and sustainability in the city. The distinction acknowledges the reinforcement of the workforce, with over 300 new hires, and the modernization of machinery for cleaning tasks.
The jury emphasized the preventive and participatory approach of municipal initiatives. These include the Urban Hygiene Plan, the creation of temporary collection points in the five districts, the implementation of organic waste containers, and awareness campaigns such as 'The Power of a Gesture'.

"This recognition endorses the work done to implement a more effective, sustainable, and accessible urban hygiene model, adapted to the reality of a complex and dynamic city like Las Palmas de Gran Canaria."

Furthermore, it was highlighted that the Urban Hygiene Plan has brought resources closer to all neighborhoods and fostered community involvement in the care of public spaces. The city is preparing for a new tender for waste collection services, which will involve an investment of 157 million euros over the next eight years.
This new contract will include the incorporation of over 100 vehicles, 191 professionals, and 10,000 new containers, aiming to increase collection frequency and move towards more efficient and sustainable management. The city's cleaning model also stands out for its commitment to sustainability, using treated water and non-potable agricultural water for street washing, thereby reducing potable water consumption.
The Broom Awards, presented since 1987, biennially recognize the work of city councils and entities in improving waste management and urban cleanliness. The awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, during the International Urban Planning and Environment Fair (TECMA) at IFEMA Madrid.
