According to the union, the municipal government's decisions clearly aim to promote cheap labor and increasingly precarious working conditions for those performing an essential service for citizens.
“"The sole objective is to opt for cheap labor and increasingly precarious working conditions for these workers, despite them performing an essential service for the citizenry."
From UGT's perspective, the current situation is a direct result of years of cuts, lack of planning, and policies focused solely on economic savings at the expense of workers' rights and health. The union points out that staff are experiencing progressive deterioration with insufficient salaries, staff shortages, excessive workload, and growing job insecurity.
The union emphasizes that employees of privatized companies perform the same duties as municipal staff but receive significantly lower wages and endure worse conditions. They consider it unacceptable for the City Council to promote public contracts that are understaffed from the outset and fail to guarantee dignified conditions.
The new contract, according to UGT, even contemplates a staff reduction that could exceed 100 workers, contradicting public statements by a municipal official about a supposed increase in personnel. Furthermore, future concessionaire companies will have to undertake key services like waste collection and container cleaning with an undervalued economic study, which is already generating significant tension and threatens to exacerbate the existing labor conflict.
“"We warn that this policy of precarization will have serious consequences for both staff and public service. An efficient service cannot be demanded while workers are condemned to job instability and wages that do not allow them to make ends meet with dignity."
Therefore, UGT demands that the municipal government abandon its policy of contempt, engage in real dialogue with union representatives, and guarantee fair working conditions commensurate with the importance of the service provided to the capital of Gran Canaria.
